In day 20 of our road trip from Tokyo to Hokkaido, we end our time in Akankohan at the Ainu Village, and peruse the gift shops that are rich with Ainu history and culture. From there, we head north to Teshikaga, and after checking out the roadside stop, take a stroll in the nearby park to take in the fresh air. We head to another michi no eki in Sattsuru with a couple onsens, and then to Shari, the last mid-sized town we’d be in for awhile. In Shari, we quickly found branded merchandise for the Shiretoko National Park, Japan’s most remote region, and the only national park that boasts the largest brown bear population in the country.
Once we’d gotten our stamps for our stamp rally books, we drove along Hokkaido’s most northeastern coast for 40 minutes, and got to our destination and lodging for the next 5 days. Shiretoko Village was a modest ryokan style inn with amazingly fresh prepared sashimi for mealtime, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere. I walked with the kids down Utoro Hill to a grocery store to expend some energy and get some snacks, and then washed up in the evening before dinner, preparing ourselves for the busy day ahead.
