Filipina & Foreigner discuss Asian/Western Cultural Differences, Mindoro,Puerto Galera, Philippines

Whilst travelling in Asia I’m regularly asked –
Are you Single?
Travelling Alone?
No girlfriend?
No Wife?
Not Married?
No Kids?
When I answer negatively I’m asked –
Why? As if they don’t believe what I’m saying or feel that there’s something wrong with me.
We do things differently in the west.

What filipina customs annoy you?
I can name a few.

In this video I trekked with other guests from Sandstorm Lodge to
Bayanan Beach in Puerto Galera for a barbecue picnic. The beach isn’t great, certainly not worth the trek or even swim from White Beach that Anthony and William endured. And bares no comparison to Secret Beach on Bantayan Island, north of Cebu with its pure white sand and turquoise water.

Puerto Galera, Mindoro houses the idyllic White Beach. As I’ve got older I’d rather be in bed early at night and up at daylight. A great start to my day is walking along the beach. White Beach is similar to Alona Beach, although the latter is monopolized by Dive Boats, when at 7am there’s a army of helpers loading the dive boats with gas canisters which make a pleasant clinking sound as they’re knocked against each other.

In Goa I’d walk for a couple of hours along Agonda Beach which was already blistering in heat. I seem to be thinking about Goa a lot at the moment. It’s almost 5 years since I was last there, so I’m due a return.

Mindoro island has been in my sights for a while now. Whilst scrolling through FB posts on good locations for expats to live in the Philippines, recommendations for Puerto Galera would frequently pop up. So it made sense to schedule Mindoro into to my plans with its proximity to Manila. I’ve got four more places to visit over the next four weeks. Where I’m heading for the final 3 after Mindoro is pretty obvious really.

It was refreshing how civilized the trike drivers were when we arrived at the port. There’s no jostling for customers that I’ve experienced at other ports. And a governmental set price for passengers. In the end I took a trike alone for 150 pesos to White Beach which was less than 5km away. Shortly after we set off the driver pulled over and picked up another couple of passengers, saying they’re his cousins. I should’ve asked him what their names are.

  1. Nice group beach outing. It seemed worth the walk to me. It looks like you all had a good time together. I think you may have met your match in that young lady who said she doesn’t want to marry? She seemed interested in you because was asking you a lot of questions trying to learn about you.

  2. You should go to the different side of mindoro, the apo reef best place to dive, you can also visit pandan island.

  3. That's a pleasant experience that is what I want for a stress-free vacation. How do I book an event like that?

  4. Uncle, here is what I found is the best thing to say when a girl asks you "how come you never got married?" You say "I never met you before."

  5. I admire your insatiable appetite for travel. I am 73 and slowed down by hip and back problems…not sure if I will heal. I knew a beautiful girl from Puerto Gallera that I met in Angeles City…always wondered what it looked like. Thanks for taking me along. Happy trails Uncle…

  6. These places are not dead to me. Relaxing, quiet and peaceful. I don’t want to go to a beach where there’s loads and loads of people. Peace and quiet and chill out is what I like.

  7. I’d be interested to know what you would think your life should be like if you were to get married.
