Japanese Firefighters Winter Water Cannon Battle 源平放水合戦

On the first Sunday of February the firefighters of the Okayama town Hinase “fight” each other in a water drainage battle at their port. They shoot water cannons at each other in small boats for about 20 minutes.

The respective teams fight under red and white banners. Red and White are traditional rival colors going back to the Genpei War (1180-1185) where the Heike and Genji fought for supremacy. Their last battle was at Dan-no-ura which was a naval battle ending in Heike defeat.

The festival takes place on the first Sunday in February at noon.
