Hakone is THE classic side trip from Tokyo. In about 80 minutes you’ve got hot springs, traditional inns, mountain scenery, and Mount Fuji views if the weather plays along.

Many people visit for just a day, but to really make the most of it, we’re showing you our suggested overnight itinerary: starting with a scenic ride on the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku, all covered by a single digital pass.

    Amazing views. I also recommend people visit Kyushu, it seems very underrated, and I travelled all over Japan, including Hakone.

    i've done the hakone loop in 2016 and 2024, and both times i found the various modes of transportation that make up the loop to be challenging to enjoy because of the crowds. still a lovely place, though.

    For anyone planning a trip: Consider staying in Odawara, which is right on the edge of the free-pass area and where most of the bus routes start, to find cheaper hotels and opening up more day-trip options to places like Atami or the Izu peninsula.
