They Tried to Scam me.. YOU are NEXT (Japan Travel Warning)

They are trying to Scam you and I almost fell for it! They knew everything about my upcoming trip to Japan.

In this video, I’m sharing the exact WhatsApp message I received that looked 100% real—including my full name, hotel in Osaka, and reservation number. Scams targeting tourists are becoming much more targeted and sophisticated, moving away from “obvious” fake emails to using real booking data.

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, you need to know how these phishing scams work, why they are happening right now, and what other fake websites (like the Visit Japan Web clones) you should avoid.

In this video, we cover:

The “Hotel Booking” WhatsApp scam that nearly got me.
The recent Booking.com data issues and how hackers access your info.
How to spot fake “Visit Japan Web” sites (the real one is FREE!).
The truth about fake flight deals and hotel listings.
Practical steps to verify your reservations before you fly.

  1. 🚨 STAY SAFE: 3 Steps to Avoid Travel Scams

Verify Directly: Log into your booking platform directly (don't use links in emails/texts) and contact the hotel via their official website or phone /portal to confirm your stay.

Go Offline: Screenshot your booking and payment confirmations. Having proof on your phone is a lifesaver if something goes wrong at check-in.

Trust Your Gut: If a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is. Never trust urgent messages on WhatsApp or random links.
    Always double-check

EVERYTHING! Have you seen any of these scams? Share your stories below to help save someone’s trip! 👇

  2. Thanks a lot for the info nathan,it helps a lot.bad people always have new ways to scam people and they get smarter everyday,ckckckckck..

  3. Scammers are getting sneakier 🫤 thanks for your help keeping us travellers up-to-date 👍 Great job, well done !

  4. I was targetet by this scam… but lucky me.. they are not very smart.. bc.. as sender show me for example Dr. Susan Smith.. etc… ( pic as medical Dr.)..

  5. Hello sir. I understand your concern and it is noble of you to share your experiences so other travellers can keep safe. My travelling style is to book directly with the airline, hotel, ryokan, JR…..etc. I just returned from my recent adventure and did not encounter any malevolent messages. I personally do not have confidence in these 3rd party booking sites. Of course it is up to each person, however I do feel confident when securing my reservations and tickets directly. Happy and safe travels to you. Sincerely………..

  6. Good advice! – the chain hotels like APA will never contact you directly. It's all automated when you book via Booking/Hotels/Expedia etc.

Interesting seeing Booking was the culprit. I only ever hear bad things about them – went to a wedding last year and I booked via my usual Hotels and friends from Ireland booked via Booking. The hotel never got my friends booking, so they were screwed.

  7. In my opinion frauds and scammers should be punished very hard worldwide, including a very long prison term!
We ordinary people work very hard to earn money to bring food on the table or to go sometimes in our lives on a holiday trip. And then we get scammed by such as…oles.
Police worldwide should search for these scammers and put them into prison for a very very long time.

  8. The biggest problem is that all these companies brag about their secure platforms. There is no such thing. Governments, banks, travel companies, airlines, etc. are being hacked all the time. They are reluctant to admit these breaches occur. So scammers are being helped by the very organizations that they impersonate to scam those organizations customers.
However, you have forewarned us. Not much more that can be done.

  9. The scary thing about these privacy breaches is that we're constantly being pushed to do everything 'online' or 'via the app' and this is exactly how your information can be stolen. They like to accuse outside hackers, but I think many times they've hired people internally or contracted out certain IT work that gave access to someone who exploited it.

  10. I received the same message just jesterday! But it looks fishy to me because its apear in WhatsApp and not in the Booking messenger. I contacted the owner and he confirm that the message was a scam.

  11. I just got back from Japan and was definitely worried as I backpacked around through 4 major cities and 8 different hotels but I used booking com also and called ahead to confirm my reservations. So glad my trip went well and that I was able to speak enough Japanese to get around. Im N4 and hope to be N3 by my next trip! Thanks for sharing!

  12. Japan hack: stay overnight at sex hotels. No reservation needed, roomier than business hotels, and clean. Also, lots of themed rooms. In rural areas, can be smokey. Note: these are Japan's largest active crime scene, hosting illegal prostitution 24/7/265. But…… they make great cheap stays too (no brekky)

  13. I get reservation notices from Agoda via Whatsapp. It's usually just information about the booking. Never asked for anything else. But yeah, it's strange they use Whatsapp to contact you even though they also send emails.

  14. Really useful heads up and many thanks for flagging! I'll definitely keep a look out in the next couple of months. Glad you weren't caught out. 👍😊

  15. Thank You for this information. The way the world is. Is crazy. I don’t travel anywhere anymore. Just sad and crazy.

  16. Thanks for the prudent warning! I just got a decline of my checkin time request? But, it was on the official website, well, it was for 8Am which was not going to fly.

  17. Thank you for the video. I have a couple of hotels already booked for my future trips, need to be more cautious from now on

  18. Husband nearly got sucked into third party site for NZ customs declaration – absolutely free on the legit site, $100 for the privilege of them holding and sending your info. Barely but actually, legal.

  19. It’s frightening that criminals continue to steal personal information from these booking websites, and it has been happening for years 😩

  20. I'm at the hotel Gracery Shinjuku this summer, and I'm surprised that it was only 150 $ a night, given it's location. Should I be worried? I booked it through a legitimate travel site that I've used for years

  21. Never allow your number to be 'searchable' by people that are not already contacts in THAT particular app.

  22. I got this same scam few days ago and almost fell for it cause it was late and I was tired!
