Welcome to the land of namahage, demon-like ogres who roam the Oga Peninsula looking for naughty children!
Don’t worry, this is all part of a yearly tradition held in northern Akita Prefecture. If you want to see them for yourself, the Namahage Sedo Festival combines folklore and Shinto rituals into a dramatic fire-lit festival. Namahage were designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in November 2018, so don’t miss this amazing local tradition!
