I planned a train trip around Hokkaido picking up from Kushiro where I had left off in 2011. It turned out to be the same time as the Snow Festival in Sapporo. We managed to book the last affordable room in Sapporo (tiny and for around ¥30000 for one night–the rest were suites for over ¥300000).
Day one we flew from Yokohama (Haneda) to Kushiro. I wanted to ride the steam train (SL), but after my friend and I both ran into transportation problems things didn’t quite go as planned. The route had us going from Kushiro to Abashiri by train in Day One and on to Sapporo by the Okhotsk Limited Express the next day.
