Ohara Festival おはら祭 Featuring Students From Kyushu Japanese Language School #おはらまつり #九州日本語学校 #鹿児島

The Ohara Festival, with more than a 70 year history, is the largest festival in Southern Kyushu. Today’s focus is on international students from all over the world such as Nepal, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, and United States, who come to study at Kagoshima’s Kyushu Japanese Language school. Students are given this rare opportunity as cultural exchange and to experience life and culture in Japan. I hope this video can be shared with their friends and families back in their country so they too can see the experience the students are having and to have fond memories of their time in Japan.

The Festival also includes Japanese taiko drumming, parades, marching band processions and traditional performing arts. The spectacular “So-odori” features more than 20,000 dancers in costumes of different team colors. This is the night parade on November 2nd. The second day of the festivities starts on November 3rd and ends at noon.

Kagoshima is still a best kept secret because it’s not close to the big tourist area. And that’s the beauty of it! Come explore the many wonderful places in Kyushu!
