I’ve been told some crazy things about foreigners in Japan. Like my students thought our American hands were too big to use chopsticks, so they were shook when our fat freedom fingers figured it out. Myth busted. But even crazier was the time a random guy told us foreigners can’t hear cicas. I have no idea where he got this from. There are sometimes I wish we couldn’t hear these bugs because we can hear them loud and clear. Obviously, most people in Japan know better, but some myths are the worst. Like only foreigners need to wear deodorant. Yeah, anybody who’s been on the train during rush hour knows this is not true. Objective. Everyone stinky. Use deodorant. And the most out of pocket thing, only foreigners get STDs. Tap diode.

    to be fair for the deodorant one. a lot of asian folks miss the gene or hormones (i am not shure what) that let the rest of the humanaty sweat

    There is a little bit of truth to the deodorant thing. Most East Asians have a non-active ABCC11 gene that makes them have less body odor. I'm 3/4 Japanese and can attest to this. I don't get noticeable body odor unless I'm very sweaty or haven't showered for a day. I currently live in the US and almost never wear deodorant. No one has ever commented on me smelling like BO.

    But I know for a fact a humid Japanese summer and a crowded train will definitely smell. And tbf, it's probably mostly from the handful of guys that skipped a shower.

    Uhm just asking since we also say "you arent able to eat fish" or "you don't know eating fish" because you hate fish. if you Translate it. In case the Cicadas do they mean Foreigners cant stand them ?

    Dude cicadas gp crazy in georgia. Yes in the us. Had a friend visit just from out of state and he was shocked by how loud they were

    Cicadas are one of the most loudest bugs on this earth. I literally hear them whenever I stepped outside.

    Well I had a joke that would have gone well with the other one but it seems to be missing in action so I'll summerize the addition.

    we have cicadas in the usa too lol they just come out every so many years also crazy how most schools in the usa have us & world history & the rest of the world just has where ever they are if theyr lucky

    As an American from Illinois, as a kid we had SO MANY LOUD cicadas in my grandma's 3 acre yard.
    There were generally a bigger population when I was younger, but yeah.
    I thought they'd never leave & I used to be afraid of them, so at one point I cried to my parents, feeling like I was going to loose my mind "PLEASE, when will they just go away!!!" 😢

    Now I find them cute. They remind me of childhood & I miss them when they're gone. 💜

    The deodorant thing makes sense, actually. I heard in most Asian countries it’s common practice to consume a body odor eliminating capsule. I’ve heard they work very well!
