Hi, I’m Toshi from Japan and tourist guide for foreigners. In this video, I will show you 5 Things to know about Japan’s Cherry blossom information in 2024. Today, I’m diving into Japan’s beloved spring tradition.

Cherry Blossom Viewing called ‘Hanami,’ is a beloved spring tradition in Japan where people gather to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms, indulge in delicious food, and savor drinks. It has become a cultural spectacle that captivates not only locals but also draws attention from international tourists visiting Japan.

Some tourists come to Japan for the purpose of cherry blossom viewing. However, the window for enjoying Hanami is brief, lasting only about two weeks each year. Typically, the best time for Hanami falls between late March and early April.

But this year, due to the effects of climate change, there’s speculation from meteorologists that the usual timing may be different. Given the immense popularity of Hanami among foreign travelers, we’ve received numerous inquiries from our viewers until now.

So, I’m here to provide you with the latest updates on cherry blossom forecasts across Japan, based on the recent announcement by Japan’s meteorological agencies on February 22. I’ll also share recommendations for Hanami spots in various regions, predict crowd conditions, and provide practical tips for enjoying this beautiful tradition.

By the end of this video, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of Japan’s Hanami culture, along with specific dates and locations to plan your visit. Be sure to stick around till the end! So, let’s get started. No1 is Cherry Blossom Forecast.

According to the most recent information from Japan’s meteorological agencies, it’s predicted that the cherry blossoms will bloom earlier than usual this year. This is due to a forecasted higher temperature than usual, which will lead to a faster growth rate for the buds.

Now, an important thing to note is that the “bloom” actually begins when the flowers start to open from the buds, not when the trees are in full bloom. This can be a misconception for many.

For those interested in visiting Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto, which are very famous spots among foreign tourists, during this time, here are the predicted bloom dates: Tokyo is expected to bloom around March 21st, reach full bloom around March 28th;

Osaka is expected to bloom around March 24th, reach full bloom around April 1st; Kyoto is expected to bloom around March 22nd, reach full bloom around March 31st. With these earlier dates compared to previous years, if you’re planning to see the cherry blossoms, it’s a good idea to adjust your travel plans accordingly.

A quick note – these are predictions as of February 22nd, 2024. I’ll be sure to tell you if there are any updates, so be sure to subscribe to my channel for more updates! No2 is Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots.

In this chapter, I’ll be sharing some of Japan’s top cherry blossom viewing spots, focusing on Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, popular among foreign visitors. First up, Tokyo! I recommend Yoyogi Park, Ueno Park, and Meguro River.

Yoyogi and Ueno Parks, being spacious, attract families and friends who gather with picnic blankets to enjoy the blossoms, accompanied by drinks and food. Meguro River, adorned with cherry blossoms along its banks, is ideal for a leisurely stroll while taking in the floral beauty.

There are also food stalls along the way, perfect for a pit stop and relaxation. Next, Osaka! Must-visit spots are Osaka Castle Park and Expo ’70 Commemorative Park. Osaka Castle Park offers a spacious setting, similar to Tokyo’s Yoyogi and Ueno parks, where you can enjoy picnics under cherry blossoms.

Meanwhile, Expo Commemoration Park, home to the iconic ‘Tower of the Sun’ from the 1970 Osaka Expo, transforms into a picturesque scene with cherry blossoms surrounding the tower in a delightful hue. Lastly, Kyoto! My recommendation is Kiyomizu-dera.

As explained in my previous video, Kiyomizu-dera is a very popular tourist destination that attracts a staggering 5 million visitors a year. This popular temple, known for its scenic views, hosts special nighttime cherry blossom viewings from March 23rd to 31st. The temple and its surroundings are beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.

Witness the magic as the Main Hall, famous for its ‘Stage of Kiyomizu,’ and the surrounding cherry blossom are beautifully illuminated. Keep in mind, these are just a few recommendations. Choose based on your interests and plan your visit accordingly. No3 is Cherry Blossom Viewing Crowd Forecast.

In this chapter, I’ll be discussing the crowd conditions and peak days at Japan’s cherry blossom viewing spots. Starting from the expected bloom dates of March 21st to March 31st, as I’ve mentioned earlier, these spots will undoubtedly be crowded.

When I attended cherry blossom viewings at Yoyogi Park and Ueno Park in the past, I noticed that the park toilets were extremely crowded. It’s best to go well in advance to ensure you have enough time.

Moreover, many people in Japan are keen to find a good spot for cherry blossom viewing, with some even camping out overnight from the previous evening. Looking at the calendar, March 23rd, 24th, 30th, and 31st are weekends and are expected to be the most crowded.

With March 30th and 31st being close to full bloom, these days are likely to be the peak viewing times. So, for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, I recommend visiting on weekdays from March 25th to 29th.

However, keep in mind that weather conditions, like rain, can also affect the crowd size, so be sure to stay updated with the latest information. No4 is Cherry Blossom Viewing Outside of Season.

In this chapter, I’m focusing on those who, unfortunately, won’t be able to visit Japan during cherry blossom season but still have a deep desire to see Japan’s beautiful sakura. Actually, I’ve received many inquiries from people who are planning to visit Japan before or after the cherry blossom season.

First of all, those who come earlier than the cherry blossom season. In that case, I recommend viewing the early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms, which start blooming from February. It is characterized by a deeper pink color than the cherry blossoms called Somei Yoshino, which are common in Japan.

The recommended place is Miura Coast in Kanagawa Prefecture, which can be reached on a day trip from Tokyo. Next, for those arriving after the cherry blossom season, I suggest heading north to Hokkaido or the Tohoku region, where cherry blossoms bloom later due to cooler temperatures.

For instance, Aomori in Tohoku blooms around April 17th, reaching full bloom on April 21st, while Hokkaido blooms around April 30th, reaching full bloom by May 3rd. It is about a month later than Tokyo and Osaka. This delayed bloom is due to the colder climate in these areas.

So, depending on your travel schedule, I encourage you to choose the best location and time to experience the cherry blossoms in Japan. No5 is Cherry Blossom with Mt. Fuji. Mount Fuji, standing at approximately 3,700 meters, is not just Japan’s highest peak but also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Throughout the year, this majestic mountain offers breathtaking landscapes and a rich variety of nature, captivating the hearts of people worldwide. Its iconic silhouette has inspired traditional Japanese poetry and woodblock prints, leaving an indelible mark on both Eastern and Western art.

I have a friend from the United States who came all the way to Japan just to climb Mount Fuji, drawn by its beauty and cultural significance.

During cherry blossom season, many visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the cherry blossoms against the backdrop of Mount Fuji, making it a popular destination. It’s worth noting that the season tends to be a bit later here.

For most spots around Mount Fuji, the best time to visit is typically from mid-April to early May. Imagine the stunning sight of cherry blossoms framing Mount Fuji’s majestic silhouette! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to add this unique twist to your regular cherry blossom viewing experience?
