Of course not only purple sweet potatoes, but Yomitan has been working hard on various other initiatives as well, so we’ll probably also make some new discoveries today! Let’s start right away! Let’s Goya! Well, today we started with a shot with Yomitan’s mascot character “Yomiton”!

The theme today is “Yomitan Village”! I often go to Yomitan Village! My hobby is collecting Yachimun, and since the Yachimun village is located in Yomitan, I often go to there to buy Yachimun. Today, we are talking about agriculture, and there are certainly a lot of purple sweet potato fields in Yomitan.

We may also make new discoveries! Let’s take a look! – So big! – Amazing! It’s like a vegetable and fruit supermarket! – They also have strawberries! Looks delicious! – Strawberries!

– Well, we’ve talked about “Beniimo” a lot on the show so far, but we haven’t shown it yet, right? – Yes! – Here it is! – The famous purple sweet potato! It has long been said to be the staple food of Okinawans,

It contains a lot of fibers, minerals, vitamins, polyphenols, anthocyanins, and more! – Amazing! It’s good for your body! – Yes! – Hello! – Hello! Nice to meet you! When you think of Yomitan Village, “Beniimo” (purple sweet potato) comes to mind, has it been around for a long time?

Yes! Cultivation methods were passed down from China’s Fujian Province about 400 years ago, and Yomitan Village was certified as a red sweet potato producing area in Okinawa Prefecture in 2004. – In particular, the “Chura Koibeni” species are very dark, dark purple. – Can I look at them?

– In Yomitan Village, there is a wonderful purple sweet potato tart… – Purple sweet potato tarts are very famous! – Using this species! – Is it still made in large quantities? – Well, in recent years, there has been an epidemic all over the country

Called the “foot rot disease”, so Yomitan Village is now working hard to find different and stronger varieties, that is the current situation. The production of purple sweet potatoes has decreased significantly. But I’m sure there are a lot of improvements being made, and new specialty products have also been created.

What kind of new products are there? Let’s take a look! – So now… we have Yomitan’s melons! – Melon! ? Eh! ? ? Here in Okinawa? – Yes! We know that there are watermelons, and also strawberries that are grown around Ginoza these days

Actually, in my hometown in France, we also make a lot of melons! My great-uncle is also a farmer who grows melons… – This is a variety called Verda, and it has green flesh! – The green one! Yes Yes Yes!

We heard at the Yunta Market that you actually started last year, but what made you decide to grow melons here? My grandpa used to grow melons, and other crops like watermelons and so. Since I was I child I always felt that those melons were especially delicious,

And my grandpa knew that, so as he was about to retire, I thought it would be sad to see this work go away, so I decided to inherit his knowledge to continue growing them. – What did you do until that? Were you working in other agriculture?? – No! Well in fact…

When I did a sugar test two days ago, most of the melons were over 15° of sweetness, so this one must also be over 15°. To be honest, the melons I’ve eaten in America didn’t have much water in them, so they weren’t very sweet.

– And the reason is that mass production is the focus… – Ah, in America, yes. It definitely can’t compete with Japanese fruits, in terms of taste. So, isn’t this the first super delicious melon that you’ve ever eaten?

Now, we’ve moved quite far away from the fields and are in the middle of Yomitan Village, next to the main street. The word “hydroponics” came up earlier! – Yes! It did! Hydroponic cultivation! A hot topic nowadays! It’s slowly becoming famous in France as well,

And, we did come here some time ago to see hydroponic cultivation! Here we are at Tamashiro Farm! – Thanks for having us! – Thank you for coming! As it grows indoors, does it mean it’s not with sunlight?

Yes! We use LED lights, then put fertilizer in the water tanks, and circulate it to grow them! – I see! That’s what hydroponic cultivation is about! – without using soil? – That’s right!

Well, a while ago, I ate some lettuce from Tamashiro Farm, and it was so crunchy and juicy! Really delicious! Since then, I’ve become a big fan of hydroponically grown lettuce, but weren’t you surprised at how clumsy Vincent was when sowing the seeds? Christal even fell asleep!

However, it was interesting to see that hydroponic cultivation is done with disposable chopsticks, instead of a shovel. I hope Vincent’s lettuce will grow splendidly! Tamashiro-san, how do you think hydroponic cultivation will grow in the future?

In Okinawa, there are a lot of typhoons, and the weather is very hot in the summer, so we don’t have much lettuce, so we want to be able to supply more and more indoor and hydroponically grown vegetables during those seasons. That’s why I’m currently expanding here, and the production volume is steadily increasing

So now I’m looking for another place, we’re currently in the central part of Okinawa, so maybe another in the south or around Naha, a place where we can grow indoors, that’s why I’m thinking of expanding it a little. And it’s not only for lettuce, of course, but also various other vegetables and herbs

– I’ve heard it’s possible to grow cherry tomatoes too! – Yes, you can also grow tomatoes. Since it can be used with a wide variety of vegetables, I think it has great future potential! I think it’s great that you’re doing something like this in Yomitan, which is a thriving agricultural area!

The lettuce that the two planted grew quickly and splendidly. Wow, hydroponic cultivation really does grow quickly! Oh wow! So, Christal! This time we saw a lot of agriculture in Yomitan Village, first we started with purple sweet potatoes, which once upon a time came from across this wide ocean,

It is said that purple sweet potatoes saved the people of Okinawa a long time ago. during times of famine, purple sweet potatoes were brought from accross the ocean, and then they cultivated a lot of them, what helped a lot, and is said to maybe, maybe be a reason for Okinawan longevity.

Well, it is said that it was eaten as a staple food when there was not much other food available. So because there were potatoes, people were able to eat properly and fill their stomach!

Tamashiro-san also said that thanks to the fact he grows lettuce hydroponically, when it’s not possible to harvest the lettuce outside – due to weather or so! – yes. Since you can provide the lettuce grown using hydroponics, you can have stable food resources!

That’s an interesting view! Both potatoes and hydroponics were/are a way to sustain a proper diet, regardless of the era! – It’s really interesting to see that Yomitan is working hard to keep achieving that goal! – To not have to worry about food resources!

    J'ai vu plusieurs de vos reportage donc je sais très bien que vous le faîte tout le temps quand c'est possible mais je trouve ça trop cool que vous essayer les différents métiers et que vous mettez la main à la tâche comme on dit (Lettuce try au passage c'est hilarant 😂😂😂), surtout que c'est impressionant de voir comme les letues que vous avez planté ont bien grandi !! Christal à du se sentir tellement dans son élément ^^
