Hot Destinations – Moving to Japan

In this video, Rob and Jim talk about how Japan has become a popular international destination. Japan is a popular destination for Americans and Canadians moving overseas. Why? The increased number of Americans and Canadians moving to Japan can be attributed to several factors. Japan’s relatively lenient immigration laws, especially toward high-skilled migrants, have made it an attractive destination. Additionally, Japan is experiencing a demographic and economic crisis, which has led to a more open immigration policy to address labor shortages.

If you’re curious about Japan, you’ll enjoy this video.

All right we’re back again this is Jim I’m here with Rob from secc international shipping uh Rob before we hit the record button we were talking a little bit about Japan so we might as well keep on going with it I saw a map the other day that showed the number of

People leaving Canada and the United States I thought it was a recent map but Japan was the number one destination really that I hadn’t seen that that that’s really surprising you know we have seen a hug huge uptick in the number of clients that we are moving

On their household goods over to Japan we have noticed that um certainly it’s just becoming more and more frequent where it didn’t happen that often um say three years ago or even two years ago but recently it’s been we’ve seen a lot so that surprises me for sure but that’s

Interesting yeah so I’m guessing these are household moves most of the people that you’ve been moving over there well yeah pretty much all of them I mean that’s our specialty is moving people’s home you know their household goods their personal effects sometimes their car motorcycle things of that nature to

A new destination right do you find that most of the people are going there for uh job opportunities transfers or are they expats or both I’m seeing I’m seeing a lot for Japan I’m seeing ex-military that may have um got married over there you know they station in

Japan they got married there they lived here you know now they’re moving back they’re retired military I’m seeing um uh dual citizens and current Japanese citizens who are here who’ve been working here for a number of years I’m seeing people just retiring there um you

Know but you got to you have to have a visa to be a permanent resident there of course so there are a lot of different reasons it’s pretty diverse for Japan unlike some other countries yeah and I I suppose knowing Japanese would definitely help right yeah I mean Japan

Of course is you know first world country and just you know absolutely Advanced um and as a result English is is pretty widely spoken but certainly learning Japan Japanese I think would be very very beneficial um you know last time I looked last time I looked I think

There were around I mean how accurate are these numbers really but I’ve I think I have 60,000 us expats currently living in Japan as of probably last year yeah it’s quite a b now of course Japan is like the like the New York I guess of

Um or what was I gonna say Tokyo Tokyo is the epicenter R right oh yeah so Tokyo is is the is the is New York you know it’s it’s about nine or maybe 10 million people Now population but yeah I mean there a lot of big cities in Japan it’s such a diverse

Country you know you can go on the west coast on the Sea of Japan and there ski the ski country in Japan go up north it snows all the time the islands to the South you know Osaka saporo and you know all these cities Yokohama big big industrial towns yeah

Yeah so now as far as preparing for this kind of move um you’re you’re in the planning stages you’re looking at all your household items and the things that you have what what are the cans and the cans uh as far as relocating from the United States to Japan to Japan yeah of

Course a relocation to Japan and moving your household goods is pretty straightforward it’s it’s somewhat consistent with any other country know what you’re going to bring work with specialist who is understands the ins and outs of clearing customs in Japan um and we certainly do that um from well

Over a decade now um gets your inventory list together and all of that but there are some cans and cans pretty consistent with most other countries you know the things that you would expect that you can’t ship to as part of your house of goods explosives and chemicals and

Counterfeit goods and um you know large amounts of currencies and things of that nature nothing really jumps added me um I think one thing that was funny on the list with Japan is I can’t is you can’t bring anything made of straw don’t bring any don’t bring any

Hay I thought that was an odd one on the list but I think what they’re saying is like most other countries don’t bring anything that’s plant-based whether living or or not living uh no raw wood that’s not isn’t stamped certified to be shipped overseas that kind of thing yeah

Now the um the time frame I I guess it depends whether you’re going to have your own container going over or whether you’re going to have less than a container and you’re sharing a container with other people what does like the whole big time frame look like going

From let’s say Los Angeles to a place like Tokyo yeah so that would be again like you said like You’ mentioned um an exclusive dedicated container for a client or 20 foot or 40 foot or 40 High were multiple containers but the containers is not shared it’s the

Client’s container door too um I would say six to 10 weeks and you know there are a number of factors that come in there that can make it less or you know closer to the six or closer to the eight maybe 10 um such I won’t get too deep

Into the weeds but you know there’s ways of loading we could do a live load sometimes if we can pull the container right to the the client’s home and live load it put the seal on on the container take it to the Port of Long Beach and

Ship it you know there’s there’s no lag time in the USA as opposed to if we aren’t able to do a what we call that live load it would be more have to pick it up we have to take it to our secure Warehouse get a container load that and

Then take it to the port that could take a little bit of time but to answer the question for exclusive containers you’re looking at about six to 10 um and when you’re doing a shared container situation where the volume is less then you’d want to have your own container to

To deal with that would be more in a neighborhood of six to you know six to 12 six to 14 weeks um to to Transit but typically 14’s pretty far on the outside now as far as visas go um they work basically just like every country

Is more or less the same with that you have to get your work visa or a temporary Visa so that you can you don’t have any trouble getting there right well yeah so in terms of shipping your household goods what the big thing is we want to avoid any duties or taxes on

Your used household goods and personal effects that are be chip when we clear customs and in order to do that yes you would have to you know have the the cons our client who’s receiving the goods would have to have a valid Visa you know a temporary not a temporary a work visa

Or permanent Visa something of that nature because they’re moving their house of goods permanently to the new resid and SDC of course you have somebody that understands the ins and outs of that kind of move in Japan to make sure that all the do documentation the person knows that’s all taken care

Of as part of the moving process right that’s absolutely and we do so much to Japan we have a specialist a logistics and sports specialist in in-house that deals with Japan not absolutely exclusively but that is their world so when we built a client that’s moving to Japan and we’re shipping their household

Goods we into the equation a support and Logistics specialist has ex you know very very highly specialized uh skill set and knowledge about Japan how to get it there smoothly with no problems and clearing customs right now let’s say you know I’m my family we’re we’re getting

Ready to move to Japan we’re in the planning stages now and I’m watching this video I can just reach out to you and you can help me get through the whole process how do is it very simple to do absolutely just you know reach out to me or anyone here at the company

That’s a specialist in relocations and uh we will help will help uh walk you through the process and make sure that it’s all done correctly for you all right great great hey Rob as always great information your information will be there on the screen and uh thanks for

Your time I’ll I’ll see you in the next video likewise it’s been a pleasure Jim and we’ll see you next time all right
