Living in Aomori Japan, which some say is the snowiest place in the world (average of 312 in of snow) there are days when you are fed up with snow, snow, and more snow…

Why would anyone want to live in such a place where half of your day is spent shoveling snow?

To be honest, I’m not sure why, but I happen to be one of them.

I visited a snow lantern festival in Aomori city this winter. As freezing as it was, I was almost in tears from the beauty and warmth that these snow lanterns shone.

As I watched each lantern being lit by a actual pair of hands (and yes, I’m sure this person was freezing as well..) I slowly came to realize it’s not the place you live that determines your happiness but how you choose to live in that place.

These people of Aomori at some point of history, decided that they would make this never-ending snow into something beautiful.

And this is what was created…
