  1. Took my students in 1999….had to get bamboo ear cleaners…..got these at Small Sumo….they have cute little sumo wrestlers on them! I got hundreds of gifts from my teacher colleagues and the students as well. I had so many gifts I sent my dirty laundry and many of the gifts back home by ship. 5 ¥ coins are considered lucky….these have a hole in them and they make great souvenirs. One of my students bought a katana (samurai sword) for her brother. It showed up on X-ray and created a problem…..they bumped us up to Business class for the trip home; (we found out a disgruntled JAL employee had rushed the cabin with a sword earlier in the month.)

  2. In Hakone now..went to Osaka and Beppu. Only 2 days left, tomorrow morning early on Shinkansen to Tokyo. We bought a small suitcase… but already have it filled. This is after buying another backpack and a duffel bag. We are now looking for a full sized suitcase. There is entirely too much to buy.

    Dead on advice for matcha.

I’d recommend a nice donabe from any of the ancient kiln cities.

And if you go south, buy a suitcase for all the Kabosu items. Kabosu is about the most delicious citrus we’ve ever had.

Ask around for local soy sauce from anywhere (everywhere) you go. Super delicious and nuanced to every area.

Lawson, 7-11, Life supermarket, etc. all are worth eating at.

  3. Please dont buy cheap suitcases. One wheel of nine broke after 1km and almost destroyed the whole suitcases. Don Quijote in Namba has Samsonite for arround 60$. Also dont buy a second suitcase. Bic Camera does sell 70l fabric duffles for arround 30$. You can get them wrapped at the airport. Thry are foldable, too. So you dont have an unused item laying arround at home. Saw them at Donki, 3 Coins, Muji and Co. for various prices. XL at Uniqlo fits like XL in Europe. The US has just complete different sizes.

  4. Zoff, my beloved

When I went last year, the staff had the little pocket translators for the foreign customers, so I thought that was pretty cool. Also, they're pretty quick too, unless you're getting special lenses, then it's a little slower, but still relatively quick!

  5. I'm going to Japan this summer so your tips definitely helped. I had no idea Royce was so much cheaper in Japan. I'm definitely stocking up on Royce this summer. Thank you for all your tips.

  6. Tokyo and Japan in general has a number of standalone New Era stores (the hat company). Each store has a unique patch you can have applied to the hat of your choosing. I've collected a number of them during my various trips to Tokyo. Nice little souvenir.

  7. Spent 3 weeks there last year. We also bought a suitcase for just our souvenirs. Personal preference but I’m a Snoopy fan & the amount of stores and Snoopy items I purchased is embarrassing. 😂😅

  8. I think my favourite things lately tend to be herbs, spices and limited edition good. Location specific foods too, there's a whole bunch of satellite shops in Ginza that are dedicated to products from various regions, we're going to go back there to get some Kobitos from Sapporo!

  9. For those who ever eat Cup Noodle, they are way better over there. So much more flavor.

  10. They do have medicines in Japan, but way easier to take a small packet of basic cold or flu medicine as the weather is different and affects people.

  11. B-side label is great, came across them on my last visit. Snagged a bunch of cool stickers and 2 cool wallet / card holders can definitely recommend them!

  12. I am lucky enough to fly to Asia for work and Japan is one of my stops.
The best part of frequently traveling to any place is no longer needing souvenirs (for myself at least).
Also not worrying about my next konbini run is something I’m grateful for too!

  13. Great info! I wish I’d bought more of the region specific Kit Kats, as you’re right, I found the popular flavours – even seasonal Sakura, at our local Miniso store! I could’ve saved space for more unique items. Ironically, I found the train jingles to be too loud, repetitive and very annoying. Interesting to learn they have a good purpose! Thanks for your channel it’s helped a lot!

  14. My favorite things are the tenugui towels that come in so many cool prints and mochi. For gluten free snacks, mochi is wonderful!
