【The Guinness World Records in Japan: MATSURI】
Sekikawa Village has a legend of a giant snake called “Osato Pass,” which tried to dam up a river and turn the village into a lake, and the village has suffered many floods throughout its history.
One of the most notable was the Great Uetsu Flood of August 28, 1967, which claimed many lives.
To commemorate the memory of the flood, the length of the giant snake in the “Taishita Monja (Daija Snake) Festival” is set at 82.8 meters, in honor of the date of the disaster.
The body of the giant snake is divided into 54 parts, and each of the village’s 54 communities build them with bamboo and straw, by villagers together to complete them.
The giant giant snake made by all villagers was paraded through whole the village on August 31st.
The giant snake, measuring 82.8 meters in length and weight 2 tons, was handmade by the villagers and has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest snake made from bamboo and straw in the world.
