TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Summer Sonic music festival in Osaka took place on August 16-17, 2025. The event lasted for two days and was held in two different cities, Osaka and Tokyo. This year, the festival was to be enlivened by the group Katseye. However, the group had to cancel their performance because two of its members fell ill.
Hybe, the agency that oversees Katseye, explained that the health issues of its members led to the group postponing its activities. “We are very sorry to share that KATSEYE will not be able to perform at SUMMER SONIC OSAKA on Saturday, August 16, due to two members feeling unwell,” the agency said as quoted from the Summer Sonic website.
What is Summer Sonic?
According to its website, Summer Sonic Osaka is one of the largest music festivals in Japan, held annually in August. The event is organized in Tokyo and Osaka. The festival was first introduced in 2000. Since 2002, the festival has adopted a unique concept, where musicians perform alternately in the two cities. For example, a performer will appear in Osaka on the first day, and then perform in Tokyo on the second day.
In Osaka, Summer Sonic typically takes place at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park. This location was chosen for its easy access by public transportation. Visitors can take a train to Nishikujo Station, then take a bus to the festival area. The organizers prohibit private vehicles from entering the event area to avoid traffic congestion.
The festival is known for its diverse selection of musical genres, including rock, pop, hip-hop, and electronic. A lineup of solo musicians and groups has graced the Summer Sonic stage, including Radiohead, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande. Summer Sonic also provides a platform for new musicians.
In 2025, Summer Sonic Osaka was scheduled to take place on August 16-17. An international and regional lineup of musicians was confirmed to attend, including Alicia Keys, Camila Cabello, J Balvin, NiziU, Treasure, and Be:First.
In previous years, the Summer Sonic lineup included performances by Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, Metallica, Linkin Park, Daft Punk, and Queen with Adam Lambert. In 2007, Arctic Monkeys were noted as the youngest main act. Black Eyed Peas became the first hip-hop group to be chosen as the main performer. By 2019, the festival featured B’z, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Chainsmokers as main acts.
