Trying $7 Solo Hotel Room in Japan’s Only “Slum” Area | Osaka Airin District
March 5th, 2024 Abeno(Tennoji), Osaka, Japan Abeno is one of the busiest areas of Osaka, located in the southern part of central Osaka BTW, what a grand castle there! Today, we move to the Osaka’s most dangerous area, “Airin District” and stay overnight there It’s also the cheapest hotel area in Japan Take the Osaka’s only Streetcar, Hankai Line from Abeno Not many tourists know there is a streetcar line in Osaka You ride for about 15 mins Transfer at Sumiyoshi Stop From Sumiyoshi, another line extends to the Nishinari Ward, where there is Airin District Let’s go dive in Nishinari Ward of Osaka Nishinari is one of the 24 wards of Osaka City with about 100,000 residents Oh, we notice there is some Graffiti in the area You are seeing another side of Japan Let’s get off at Shin-imamiya Stop The station looks creepy enough Is this Japan? Welcome to Shin-imamiya, entrance to Airin District Okay, let’s walk and find a cheap hotel With only a short walk, you get surprised at how cheap this area is for hotels “Hotel Apollo” Looks like an old apartment From “850JPY/5.95USD” a night! “Hotel New Kameya” But the problem is most hotels here are already full book… But I won’t give up 800JPY! No room Check-in time of most hotels here are from 10 AM So if you arrive late, you will have trouble finding a room like me The parking lot is 100JPY per 1 hour, crazy… I was luckily be able to find a room! at “Business Hotel Wako” Wow it’s like a jail or just an old apartment This is our today’s room 627 You’ve got a key and a.c. remote The cost was only 1,000JPY/7.0USD for a night in central Osaka Amazingly cheap Well, it’s actually not bad It’s like a tiny Japanese single apartment There is only bare minimum for a hotel stay The hotel even offers monthly stays for like 30,000JPY/210.0USD You can really live here Don’t worry There is a window which can be opened Fresh air We’ve got a television TRASH CAN Fridge No mini bar Sad The remote was out of battery tut-tut C’mon c’mon A low table, remote for TV and earphones Mattress, blanket, and hard pillow Layered No smell There are some stains in the room but it’s not a problem for this price There are 4 hangers, nice By the way, Fairly nice views, isn’t it? You can see the Osaka’s tallest building, Abeno Harukas, right in front of you 300m/984.25ft high You are provided with slippers (no outside shoes allowed) Here is a restroom It’s a bit smelly STAY PATIENT It’s a Japanese traditional toilet that most Japanese dislike actually But there is also a western toilet! Thanks God for saving our lives There are washing machines (One is out of order) Sink Looks like you can barely do cooking here Insert coins to start cooking It costs 100000000000000000 JPY There is a microwave CAT The hotel appearance looks not like a 1,000JPY hotel It’s the safest hotel in the area because there is a police station right in front of it As far as I know, it’s the police station with the strictest security in Japan Fire department in iron gates and iron grates on windows not like JAPAN Let’s walk and explore the district With only a short walk, you see people in Airin District are addicted to vending machines All the vedning machines in here sell only alcohols haha Unmanned bar Even beer bottles are sold There are thousands of vending machines in the district Walking alone does not feel dangerous at all But there is definitely a different atmosphere from other areas of Osaka Snacks are even sold in vending machine For alcohols, of course Everyday items 1A drink is available from 50JPY/0.35USD! Let’s go see the Statue of Liberty Statue of Liberty I didn’t know that we are in New York What a fancy dog The cheapest hotel in the area is here “Ryokan Kaname” from 500JPY/3.5USD Let’s eat Takoyaki as we are in Osaka Takoyaki 10 pieces only for 200JPY/1.4USD waiting for takoyaki They did it! 200JPY Takoyaki It actually tastes amazing despite the price This is real TAKOYAKI of Osaka This is truely what we want when we are hungry 7PM “Horumon Marufuku” Let’s eat the soul food of the area That’s Horumon “Horumon” means “discarded things” They are beef or pork offal People love Horumon and they usually come with beer! There are so many stands of Horumon in the area so you won’t get bored Let’s move to the nearby area, Shin-Sekai Take a train for 3 mins Kaonashi(No Face) may be on the train with you Welcome to Shin-Sekai(meaning “New World”) It’s like a dream world but really exists The area was modelled after Paris and New York Paris Eiffel Tower and New York Times Square Let’s climb up the Tsutenkaku, Osaka’s landmark tower The Biriken-san welcomes you on board the elevator Beautiful night city lights spread out before us The observatory stands not so high but the views are amzing enough Party time Shin-Sekai is guarded by Biriken-san Feeling nostalgic of old Japan in Shin-Sekai Let’s have a night snack Quick Sushi meals Asari-clam miso soup Tsuna, salmon, and shrimp With highball, it was less than 1,000JPY 1/7.0USD in total Everything is affordable in the area How many cats and dogs have we seen in this video? Time for a bath I visit a public bath outside the hotel “Suemoriyu” It’s a Japanese traditional Sento place(public onsen in town) Buy tickets on vending machine Only cash One adult costs only 550JPY/3.85USD with a rental towel I enjoyed ice creams and milk afterwards We Japanese have a custom of drinking coffee milk after taking a bath It was pretty refreshing Let’s slowly walk back to the hotel I don’t feel any danger so far at night, except screaming men “If you want to be a man, don’t work at a ‘host club’ or do underworld jobs. And, don’t sell drugs at bars!!” Here is the hotel lobby by the way Can use a free pc Phone Dry your hair at lobby They sell cigaretts in hotel lobby, nice There are also baths in the hotel Shower rooms are open 24 hours I notice that vending machines in hotel are expensive compared to those in town There is a Lawson convenience store but the drunk are gathered around Let’s just relax and sleep I was luckily able to turn on the a.c. Have a good night me! MORNING What a peaceful morning I already checked out the hotel Business Hotel Wako was good enough for an overnight sleep If you are eager to go as much cheap as possible, hotels in Airin District are not bad Let’s have breakfast and leave town “Ootora Shokudou” Offering tradional breakfast meals at affordable prices Pork miso soup set meal, 600JPY/4.2USD Rice, pickles, Macaroni salad, Dashimaki Tamago, and pork miso soup Dashimaki Tamago is Japanese rolled omelette with Dashi Eat it with soy sauce The Macaroni salad was the best of the best Every dish has a perfect match with rice This is Japanese breakfast Found another unmanned vending machine bar Just coffee can 50JPY/0.35USD Every morning starts with a can of coffee NESCAFE Yes, the place is not clean at all If you need snacks, visit a snack bar, run by one old man Choose what you want and hand coins to the man I’ve got Kappa Ebisen for 170JPY/1.19USD This is not so cheap though “Kasuga Entertainment Place” “Video game from 50JPY/0.35USD We are back in 1980s – 90s There are thousands of retro games This arcade has been around here since 1959 It seems like time has frozen in this place You forget about time and enjoy games Thank you for watching the video today Please leave a like and comment if you enjoy the video! That is worst area you have to be kidding. Besides the smattering of graffiti that is cleanest slum I have ever seen
This isn't the Osaka of the early 80's I remember. I lived on the same street and only 1 block away from what was then the President's Palace and it was a wonderful neighborhood. I never saw the streetcars, perhaps they were there back then but in another area.
I lived there for 3 years and have fond memories of Osaka.
Hahahaha I chose paper. Please more videos more videos more videos ๐๐๐
Love the old retro arcade games there
American here in the Kansai area, who's been living here for a little over 20 years. Yes, I definitely know that line very well. I use it quite a bit to Tennoji. The older cars feel a bit nostalgic. You can't go wrong for 280 yen one way. Regarding that slum area, it's not all that bad. In fact, being from LA, I'd rather be there than in some areas around LA. It's not so dangerous either. No gang members, fighting, attacks, or any of that. Just mostly run down buildings and lots of old people who are mostly down on their luck, but no gang members of any sort there.
Actually, if you are a musician on tour with a small budget, that location would be perfect. Cheers from Canada !
Kind of "Gritty Future" Bladrunner vibe here. Being a gaijin I had to keep looking up terms like Horumonyaki, Takoyaki and Kaonashi! LOVE Japanese culture but I do NOT think I could stomach that offal.

Thanks!
The streetcars in Toronto, Canada, are newer than the streetcars in Japan.
First time we tie at RPS. Thank you for 16mos old video, very nice to see the area. Now, STOP SLACKING โ๏ธ

1:51 don't be shocked but there's been graffiti all over Japan visible from trains for decades. Of course now, since everyone has a youtube channel and a camera, it looks like it's just 'now' happening.
Nice to see you back. Hope all is well for you. Thanks for showing "slum", normal neighborhood here in Las Vegas. Good to see how others in world live.
Don't know why you bothered to ride two separate street cars to get there. It's only a 10-minute stumble, down the hill, from Abenobashi where you started in the first place anyway. That or a 3-minute taxi ride.
Thank you for your video- as soon as i saw the tram top, i knew exactly where you were! – i have stayed in the same (Shin-Imamiya) area each time i have visited Osaka…trip # 5 coming up soon. ๐
2:40 oh yeah feels like nyc, with the included bum laying on the street.
4:55 reminds me of the projects.
Wonderful vlog! I really enjoyed seeing the less traveled areas of Japan. One thing which thrilled me: The Lawson convenience store company was originally started near my hometown of Akron, Ohio way back in 1939! Itโs intriguing that today one can only find them in Japan.

18:36 Just wonder what's happened back there sound like drunk man have hardest party for tonight๐
Wow Travelgeek, thank you for a trip into a part of Osaka most outsiders would most likely never see. I don't mind older areas of cities that don't see much change. It's a step back in time of sorts and simple living. I can't get over the prices though. You really have a hard time finding that good a deal even in the most rural parts of the US. What a fascinating place!
This is considered upper-middle class in the US
Do they have rooms with bathroom?
I appreciate you showing this side of Japan, though I would never stay here and I pray everyone has more ambition and money to not be drawn to a place like this. Someone even lied and had the audacity to say that this is middle class is America and it is not! I think some people get used to being in bad situations that they start to justify and make light of it. Itโs sad. ๐ I will not pretend Iโm in love with the hotel, but I do like the area down the street that was modeled after Paris and New York. The old Japan is very interesting.
That's not bad at all. I saw some expensive Dubai hotels with large rooms not cleaned as your tiny one. Pretty good video, thank you ๐
Filmed on my birthday! Cool!
