Every New Year’s Eve these mountain spirits, the namahage, descend on the town of Oga on Japan’s northwest coast.
It’s an ancient ritual whose impressive displays have become well-known throughout Japan as a symbol of Akita.

Half a century ago, a separate special festival was created featuring the namahage where outsiders could see them as well. For the 50th anniversary, this year it was bigger than ever.
