We went on a day trip from Fukuoka to Beppu on the Sonic Limited Express train (about 2 hours). From Beppu Station you can take the bus to the first 5 hells in the Kannawa district, then another bus to the final 2 hells. The hells we visited are: Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku. They’re all natural hot springs, the same type as found in Japanese onsen. They really are so strange and unusual, and this was the highlight of my time in Kyushu.
