This time, our host visited Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. Taketa City is located in the southwest of Oita Prefecture, next to Kumamoto and Miyazaki prefectures, and is surrounded by many natural wonders running from the magnificent highlands to the Five Peaks of Mt. Aso. This includes the Kuju Mountain Range of the Aso-Kuju National Park, the Kuju Highland, which spreads out around the mountain base, and the UNESCO Eco Park Mt. Sobo.

And utilizing all these natural blessings is the dynamic Open-air Theater TAO no Oka.

The Open-air Theater TAO no Oka is located within Aso-Kuju National Park at an elevation of 3398 ft, and hosts various entertainment shows blending the nature, music, and traditions of Japan. Its Theater in the Sky is set against sweeping panoramas of the Oita wilderness, and is unlike any other venue in the world. Here, the Japanese taiko drum entertainment group DRUM TAO puts on performances amongst the vast nature. Other highlights include clothing exhibitions by designer Junko Koshino, a cinema, and more. Join our host as they explore the world of DRUM TAO!

At the cafe, which was designed by members of DRUM TAO, we recommend the tricolor baguette, seafood cream pasta, and matcha latte. Don’t forget to stop by to enjoy the tastes of fresh ingredients from Oita before or after your DRUM TAO show!

For this video, we were also granted a special interview with former member and current Director of TAO Cultural Foundation, Maki Morifuji.

We’ll also show you footage of a stunning DRUM TAO performance at Theater in the Sky.

We hope this video will inspire you to visit Taketa City and experience the deep excitement only found at Theater in the Sky and the blissful nature that lies all around it.

*The fees mentioned in the video are as of September 2023.
