How to Section Hike North Japan’s Michinoku Coastal Trail

The new Trail & Train website offers a lot of useful information about the trail as well as a luggage delivery plan, local guide services, and more:

Unfortunately, the official government site (https://tohoku.env.go.jp/mct/english/) recently pulled all the free PDF maps they were offering for download. Now you have to pay for them, unfortunately. Still, it is better to get paper maps for the section that you’re interested in hiking, so worth ordering in advance. You can order maps here: https://m-tc.org/en/explore/map/

There’s also a great free informational site/community by a half British, half Japanese man named Robin. He hiked the entire trail in 2022 and has gathered tons of great resources on his site: https://www.michinokutrail.com/

Past videos I’ve done that relate to the trail, kayaking, and boat rides off that coast:

  1. I always think it's a charming idea to hike a trail with everything on your back and see the natural parts having hiked in from the built-up ones, but I can totally see how cherry picking the natural parts of the MCT would be very worthwhile, along with baggage forwarding if you hike as part of a longer trip in Japan! I could see myself doing this one day… And I would especially like to have an onsen bath at the end of every hiking day. Perfect 👌😁

  2. wow, Congratulations to everyone involved. From your video and taking a look at the links, it seems well thought out and organized, an example for other places. Thank you so much for your hard work and for spreading the word.

  3. I spent a day hiking south from Hachinohe and returning by local train. It was one of the best days in Japan! Plus you can get to Hachinohe pretty quickly from Tokyo.

  4. I love coastal trails. My sense of orientation isn't great but with coastal trails you can't really get too lost as long as you keep the sea on the correct side. 😉 I walked a part of this trail starting at the Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe and finshing in Taneichi, if I remember correctly. Can highly recommend even for beginners, since the JR train line runs parallel here, you can basically decide at any time to cut your walk short, hop on a train and return to Hachinohe.☺

  5. Quinlan's hair was not perfectly quiffed for a section of the video, still recovering from the shock! 😋

  6. Hi Quinlan, great to see another brilliant video so soon. It looks very well organised and I would imagine would make planning a visit a lot easier too. I’ve always been fascinated by people that through hike the long distance trails such the AT in the US for a well known example.

I would definitely plan doing something like a 3-5 day visit and combine some of the other activities you showed too, it looks like you could spend countless days with what’s on offer.

I also really admire you advertising that there are other English speaking guides available to hire their expertise from including yourself. I think that will really benefit spreading more awareness and knowledge of the trail to a wider audience.

Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone, I really enjoyed it. Best wishes and also happy thanksgiving from England

  7. God i really love your stuff and want to hike Japan one day, beautiful work my dude dont stop

  8. Once again Quinlan the drone footage ia on point. Everytime I see those coastlines I get the urge to get on the trail.

One question. Is recreational fishing allowed along there or just commercial? It would be cool to catch dinner while hiking along.

  9. All your videos about the trail are interesting. I think anywhere in Tohoku or even further north in Hokkaido would be very interesting to explore.
