Don’t get me wrong Tokyo is amazing, but surprisingly our favorite adventures and memories of Japan were all outside of the big 3 (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka)!
There are multiple other cities you could probably throw on this list but here are our top 3 you have to visit:
Lake Kawaguchi 🗻
The pictures speak for themselves. This quiet little town gave us incredible views of Mt. Fuji everywhere we went, some of the best food we had, peace and quiet after a busy 10 days in Tokyo, and we met some of the nicest people here.
Sapporo ⭐️
First off the best ramen in all of Japan (in our opinion) can be found here.
Secondly making a day of wandering the city, going to the chocolate factory, and Sapporo beer museum is a must.
Bonus points that this is an easy home base for making day trips to Asahidake volcano, blue pond, and Otaru.
Asahikawa 🍁
I’ll be honest, this town doesn’t have a lot going on, but the hotels were super affordable, the Hokkaido Gokoku shrine during the fall here is one of the most magical places we have been to.
Additionally you are only about an hour ride to Asahidake Volcano which was one of our favorite adventures of our entire trip.
