Matsushima is an island located in Shimotsui, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It is located 600m off the coast of Mt. Washu. With an area of 0.08km2, it is the smallest inhabited island in Okayama Prefecture.

In 1948, the population exceeded 100 and a branch of Shimotsui Junior High School was established.
In 1971, 52 people lived there. After that, the population decreased and the branch school was closed in 2000.
Currently, the school building is used as the Matsushima Branch Art Museum. As of 2023, the only resident of the island is one male immigrant.
He is active as an artist and sculptor, and has teamed up with the Washuzan-Shimotsui Town Development Promotion Council, lobbying the government, and carefully building relationships with those involved in Matsushima.🥷🇯🇵
The long bridge in the background is the Seto Ohashi Bridge, the world’s longest railway-road bridge. Its total length is 12.3km.✨

1971年には52人が住んでいたとの事ですが、 その後、人口減少に伴い分校は2000年に閉校となりました。
2023年現在、島の住民は男性移民1名のみです。 校舎は松島分校美術館として利用されています✨
アーティスト、彫刻家としても活動して、鷲羽山・下津井まちづくり推進協議会と連携して行政に働きかけるなど、松島との関係を丁寧に築いているそうです🥷♡
