This time, I went for a walk in Ueno’s “Ameyoko”.
Ueno is a city rich in history and culture, with Japan’s first park, Ueno Onshi Park (Ueno Park), the bustling district of “Ameyoko” where department stores and eateries gather, and the birthplace of the coffee shop within the area.
Ameyoko is a shopping street located in Taito Ward, Tokyo, and its official name is “Ameyoko Shopping Street Federation.” Along about 500 meters between Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station, there are approximately 400 shops.
The history of Ameyoko is old, said to have started from a black market after World War II.
At that time, there were many candy shops and stores dealing with goods released by the American occupation forces, which is said to have led to the name “Ameyoko.”

It is a popular spot for Tokyo sightseeing and is visited by many people both from Japan and abroad. It is a great place to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the downtown area, and you can also enjoy local gourmet food such as “oden,” “yakisoba,” “takoyaki,” and “drinking spots.” There are also many stalls where you can experience Japanese culture with various unique Japanese marine products and tea.
