On November 3rd (Bunka no Hi – Culture day) the onsen town of Hakone puts on a daimyo (lord) procession with 170 people representing the old Sankin-kotai processions that used to go through Hakone from 1635-1862.

Daimyo were required by law from the Tokugawa Shogunate to keep a residence in Edo (Tokyo) where they kept their wives and children. They would reside in Edo every other year and they would journey there with an expensive entourage. Keeping two lavish residences and making the Sankin-kotai kept the finances of the daimyo in check so that they couldn’t finance rebellions against the Shogunate.

  2. I saw the 1992 version of this event – in your video it's just as I remember it. Thanks for the upload!
