In the small town of Yunishigawa in Tochigi they hold a festival to honor their town’s founders. Over 800 years ago two great samurai clans – the Heike and Genji – warred with each other for control of the country. The Heike were eventually utterly defeated and the survivors fled to remote areas like Yunishigawa.

In June, Yunishigawa does a parade of samurai and a variety of performances including biwa songs from the Tale of the Heike. This is a compilation of several years of the festival having been there 4-5 times.

  1. That female biwa player is the most fantastic I've ever heard. Wish we could hear more of her playing and singing.

  2. Looks like a fantastic Matsuri. You did a brilliant job of editing to show the highlights of the Matsuri!!! Thank you. Were all the performances accompanied by live music? & how many days was the Matsuri? Again, thanks for the wonderful clip of this Matsuri!

  3. Sweet matsuri. So awesome how these traditions are still carried on. Being cut off from the rest of the world did japan no harm and actually accomplished what it set out to do by preserving the traditional ways of the people of Japan

  4. Most of the stuff I have seen is mostly Edo period. Nice see to some of a less known period ( at least in my country )
