Sydney, Australia walking tour – The Rocks (vlog 2)

Sydney, Australia is well-known for a historic neighborhood called The Rocks located in the Central Business District. It was the site of the first European settlement in Sydney. The area has been revitalized, and today, it combines history, culture, dining, and entertainment. In this video, I’ll bring you on a walking tour of The Rocks during daytime and nighttime, including some of the top things to do in town. You’ll discover Sydney’s oldest house, the oldest pub, the tiny houses of the past, and see the view from Australia’s most famous bridge.

► WHO AM I?

I am a Brazilian-American journalist living in Florida. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer. I created this channel to share the beauties of the world… stuff that, for so long, I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!

P.S.: The funny guy who appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American, and he’s actually camera-shy. That’s why he’s behind the camera most of the time 😉

  7. Actually, if the British Empire only wanted to dump criminals, there were any number of areas where that could have been done, much more cheaply and easily.. They were looking to expand into the Pacific, and having a port in Australia was to be a stepping stone. Since Britain also had an over-supply of convicts, shipping some there as an early workforce was seen as a convenient way of killing multiple birds with one stone.

Interestingly, the commander of the First Fleet was one Arthur Phillip, a RN officer who had a previously fairly average career. But, unusually, he'd spent a lot of that career sailing with the Portuguese. Also, on the way to Australia, the Fleet stopped in at Rio de Janeiro, then a Portuguese possession, and many feel that Phillip's Portuguese connections were made use of here, perhaps charts or information that they needed?

  8. Interestingly you linked the dates between American independence and British occupation in 1780s. I am half Dutch and half British Australian and have done a lot of research on who discovered Australia.
    Her is what I have discovered through research so far;
The first Dutch map of Terra Australias is from the early 1500s. The Dutch basically controlled the East Indies (Indonesia) until the forth Anglo Dutch war in the 1780s. So although the Dutch never actually claimed Australia, they may have given it to the British after that battle.
It's very hard to find factual information and evidence on the history of Australia, however there are a few YouTube channels that use old Dutch, Portuguese, French and British maps which contradict what we were taught about Australian history in Australian schools.
Of course the indigenous Australians were here for 60,000 years before all this happened.
I personally believe the Dutch regularly visited and maybe even occupied with Australia prior to British arrival.
The British then needed to establish a new colony so charged people for petty crimes, in my family's case it was a stolen handkerchief and a pig. They were then usually freed on liberty passes after 6 months. Yes there were hardened convicts. But in my personal opinion, they just needed people to start the new great southern colony.

  9. I'm impressed that you realise that the US colonies of Virginia, Maryland and Georgia were prison colonies way before Australia. Also, I'll point out that the word "criminal" is harsh as most early arrivals were convicted of petty crimes such as stealing a loaf of bread to feed their starving children. Indeed, most of the early arrivals were little more than victims of an unfair and unjust society in England at the time. Somewhat more dangerous offenders did arrive for a few decades after this but were generally kept segregated from the rest of the early communities.

  10. My great , great great grandmother was the youngest convict to be transported 13 .. her name was Mary Wade .. the Matriarch of a massive family of new Aussies..

  11. Sydney. I may be biased because it’s my hometown and I have lots of memories on those little lanes, streets and shops, but it is always the most beautiful city for me. Even after my trip to Europe with their quaint little towns, Sydney is still my number 1. There is nothing that can beat the feeling of surrealism when you walk on The Rocks during the sunset.

  12. This is a very well done video you made Sydney city look incredible.
And you are such a pro at this, you know your stuff.

  13. Thank you for another beautiful video. It's been some years since I visited the Rocks so you have whetted my appetite for a visit next time I'm in Sydney. Happy travels!

  14. Love the buildings in Sydney. Its beautiful and interesting combination of modern and old architecture

  15. We prefer the term CONVICTS…. not CRIMINALS…. please! Many were Irish political convicts and also petty criminals.

  16. Sydney is still the byword for corruption in Australia.
Fun fact. Property developers and real estate agents are banned from particular political positions in NSW.
