Joe’s Shimanami Kaido: The best-kept secret and it’s NOT on the Shimanami Kaido! (Part II)

In this video, we found the “best-kept secret” of where to cycle for people who want to take their time, enjoy meeting and interacting with the local people, and experience island life. Very few people have heard of Kamijima-cho, which is a small archipelago of 25 islands, the four major islands make up the new cycling path that is much shorter and easier than the Shimanami Kaido. It has its own unique name, the “Yumeshima Kaido” or the “Dream Islands cycling path,” some even call the Yumeshima Kaido the “mini-Shimanami.” But this cycling course is not part of the Shimanami Kaido. There is no road access, only by boat. This cycling course is ideal for older people, families, beginning cyclists, and people who just want to experience the local people and region and are not worrying about riding 75 kilometers in one day from Onomichi to Imabari. This is Part II of the actual cycling and journey of Joe’s Shimanami cycling team. Part I was about getting to Imabari which was our base camp and starting point. This video is a summary of our two days of cycling and riding the ferries to and from Imabari. A huge thank you and shout out to Peter Stortz for many of the video clips and photos that were used in this video!

  1. Mike, these are great pieces of advice, and comes very handy! I'm planning to cycle on the Shimanami next autumn, I'm used to cycling, but yet it is great to consider what happens if you cannot or don't want to cycle the whole route in one go. Amazing video, as always!

I'm looking forward to cycling there, I'm missing japan so much 😊

  2. thanks for the info👍 we did it with no plan a few years ago…..only 2 islands. the part where you got lost looking for the ferry was exactly what happened to us. we were on Innoshima. ended up stopping at the post office and the lady there helped us by drawing a map. 😊
