Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is located on Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. While it may sound like a single mountain, it’s actually a group of five peaks, and there are some fantastic hikes in the area with incredible views and surprisingly alien vistas.
In this day trip we’re going to go from Aso station out to the spectacular active crater near the Aso-Sanjo bus terminal, then up to the summits of Nakadake and Takadake. I’ll then introduce you to a fantastic onsen/bathhouse near Aso station that you can use to unwind at the end of the day. This is an ideal day out to put on your next Japan trip itinerary!

Oh wow! I love volcanoes and have been to a few in various parts of the world. I knew that Kyushu had a lot of volcanic activity but this is an amazing showcase of it. Absolutely must put this on my list!
