The former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters are located in the place where Rear Admiral Minoru Ota and his men desperately fought to the end on 13 June 1945 (south of Naha in Kaigungo-koen). You can visit the commanding officer’s room and the operations room as it was during the battle. Also, the tunnels, which were constructed using hoes and picks, still exist in their original condition. Only 250m of the tunnels are open to the public. Approximately 4.000 men committed suicide or were killed as the Battle of Okinawa drew to its bloody conclusion.
