Kawadoko aka Floating River Restaurant in Hakone!

Book now on byFood.com: https://www.byfood.com/restaurant/hakone-kawadoko-gyunabe-ukon-2071

Kawadoko dining is a unique Japanese dining experience that involves eating on a tatami mat next to or on top of a river in the summer months. Join Shizuka as she travels to Hakone, a town in Kanagawa Prefecture known (and loved) for its range of art galleries, museums, nature, onsen, and kawadoko dining. Kawadoko is a quintessentially Japanese dining experience that involves dining beside or on top of a river. It celebrates nature, the seasons, and provides welcome respite from the summer heat.

Shizuka begins her Hakone adventure with a sweet stop at Hakone Teramisu, a new spot in town selling tiramisu desserts! She indulges her sweet tooth with some tiramisu soft serve and a brandy tiramisu before moving on to the next destination… Deli and Cafe Mitsuki. This charming cafe, located on the 3rd floor of a building beside Hakone Station, serves tofu shakes with a breathtaking river view! What will Shizuka try? Their specialty black sesame tofu shake!

After recharging, the journey must continue. Shizuka heads to Gyunabe Ukon, the first and only kawadoko-style restaurant in Hakone. This enchanting restaurant sources its kuroge wagyu beef from all over Japan and pairs it with locally grown vegetables. After a friendly staff member shows her to her riverside seat, Shizuka settles on a supersized sukiyaki course meal. She’s presented with a feast including a beef cutlet tortilla, a mouthwatering beef sushi set, and a simmering beef sukiyaki hot pot, the restaurant’s specialty. She ends her kawadoko dining experience with dessert (mizu manju) before bidding us adieu.

  1. ついに箱根にきましたね。私もSIZUKAさんといっしょに足湯につかりたいですね。I would also like to soak in the footbath with SIZUKA.😊

  2. Raw beef can be amazing if you get the good quality stuff. Some places have some lower standards, which can be cheaper but you really need to cook it. Steak tartare is the western classic but I've tried Beef Tataki (which isn't quite raw but close enough) with a raw egg yolk. It was delightful.

  3. This place looks awesome. Will check it out next time when I am in Japan again. I am not so sure about beef sushi with sea urchin though? 🤮 Thanks Shizuka and By Food again for showing Hakone ! keep it up 👍

  4. I can’t get enough of Shizuka and Japan by Food. 🇯🇵 The beef sushi looked amazing. 🍣

  5. What an awesome spot with delicious looking food. I literally would love everything you ate in this episode.

  6. I have been to Hakone last year and ate at the ice cream place. One thing that should be mentioned about eating in hakone is that a lot of places close very early so it can be difficult to get dinner.

  7. You put so much efforts into making video and these videos have such a great quality. They can be easily be telecasted as food series on TV. Great work!

  8. Hakone looking pretty as always, the tiramisu so tempting (Maybe I would have added that it is a bit of a – pleasant – hike – 1.3km – if one wants to get to Gyunabe Ukon by foot from the station). Thanks Shizuka and team 🙇‍♂

  9. Wow I still can't afford it because the rich class leaches everything from people like me and I don't even have healthcare but the rich have a nice time and travel right now. So cool, it will never end in an armed uprising, kawaiii!

  10. The soft serve machine is one of the hardest pieces of equipment to clean in food service. 😢

  11. Waaaa…. was there last August, we didn't try eating besides the river tho but we saw an alley and boom lead us to a very beautiful view, saw some tourist also dipping their feet on the water.

Any future Mt. Fuji hike project then food adventure after?

  12. video content and presentation of the host are excellent, keep it up, well done

  18. My dear Shisuka, you make me soooo very jealous for all of these amazing dining experiences. Your beautifully crafted videos and your sunny disposition make viewing your videos such a pleasure to watch. If ever I travel back to Japan I will try to experience some of the places you recommend. This one looks so beautiful. Many thanks, Muffy from Oz (Australia)

  19. On an episode of soko ga shiritai, they went to a very nice and fancy restaurant that was literally over the top of a small stream and surrounded by nature. Its very popular in the summer months. I cant remember where it was but it looked so beautiful and calming. And with wonderful food and presentation of course…
