Random story inspired by your "these are not for consumption" quip: I was at a seafood restaurant in Kawasaki, and ordered a couple of dishes (unagi and hamachi kama). As soon as I finished ordering, the waitress went to the kitchen and then returned with three small raw smelt (shishamo). I thought, "OK. Some tiny sashimi!" and gulped one down. It was then that the waitress returned with a small charcoal grill (shichirin), to which I realized that I was supposed to COOK the smelt π₯ While it was still pretty delicious raw, I later embarrassingly enjoyed my cooked appetizer fish.
