I’ve lived in Japan for over 2 years and I finally am getting the chance to hike Mt. Fuji. There’s a saying here, “If you don’t climb Mt. Fuji during your first time here Japan WILL BRING YOU BACK! As much as I loved the overall experience and completing the hike, it was difficult but not why you would think….
The rapid changes in altitude may cause you (as they did me) shallow breathes even with minimal effort. You can also feel your heart beating very rapidly at times during the steeper inclines.
Our hike was a 1-day trip but there you can reserve rooms at some of the stations on the way up to stay the night and get an early start to catch the sunrise at the summit.
See below for the recommended packing list:
– Rain jacket and pants
– Waterproof backpack
– Base layers (tops and bottoms)
– 1.5L of water or more
– Peanut butter and other protein bars
– Yen for the bathrooms and stick stamps
– Hat and/or sunglasses
– Charging bricks for electronics
– Oxygen can
– Chapstick
