After 4 months of full time life on the road traveling around Japan in our van, we headed home to Tokyo for the holidays to get our MOT (road-worthiness inspection) done to make sure the van was roadworthy (a scary moment after all the unorthodox vanlife DIY renovations) and to grab my new Japan residence visa before hitting the road once more. To make up for all the lost time we spent doing van and visa admin work over the holidays, we decided to drive nonstop for 2 days from Tokyo to Osaka to continue our adventure. Using toll roads, the journey should take around 6 hours and around ¥12,000 ($120), but as van lifers on a budget, we wanted to see how cheap (and how long) the journey would take us without adding the toll routes!

We started our journey at Tokyo Station in Marunouchi, the heart of Tokyo, to see the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beats 2021 Tokyo Christmas illuminations (and many, many santas), eat what is apparently one of Japan’s best curry pan (curry-filled bread) and take in life back in Tokyo before setting off down country roads to our next prefecture and next big city; Osaka. After all, even after 20 years of magic, there’s no better exchange of cultures and nothing more festive than Harry Potter.. and food.

Come with us for a walking tour of Tokyo before we start our mammoth 48 hr drive and set off for more van life adventures to check off all of Japan’s 47 prefectures from our bucket list!

  1. I'm really enjoying this more up pace video posting schedule and the fact that you guys are sharing many different facets of van life and living on the road

  2. Hi, definitely not crazy if you are enjoying yourselves, having fun and are together. Love Harry Potter too, seeing the lights was great, thanks.

  3. 東京駅 駅舎は、近代建築の巨匠 辰野金吾の代表作ですね! 時代は変れど威厳と美しさを感じます。 大好きです

  4. Absolutely delightful! A sense of deja vu (as we were staying in that area) absorbing the holiday atmosphere around the same time as you both. Lovely memories…

  5. I really wanted to see the lights but never got a chance, I think it was but they were until March. So glad I got to experience it thanks to you both, also why does Tokyo station look so different to me. Glad you got to come back to Tokyo for a moment, cannot wait for your next visit and good luck on your mammoth journey ❤️❤️
