The motorship Valfiorita was a merchant ship of 6,200 gross tons, originally built for commercial use and converted for military use during the Second World War.

In particular, it was used to transport vehicles, equipment and ammunition for the supply of Italian troops engaged in the world conflict. The ship was sunk on 8 July 1943 during navigation between Messina and Palermo, by the British submarine HMS Ultor, which struck it with a torpedo in the bow area. The commander of the Valfiorita tried to point towards land to rescue the ship, but the damage caused by the torpedo was so devastating that the bow section broke away from the rest of the structure, causing its sudden sinking.

The Valfiorita ship still lies in front of the inhabited area of Mortelle, in the province of Messina, at a depth between 55 and 70 meters, in perfect navigation structure and still retains its last load consisting of trucks, cars and motorcycles of the ‘era. The Valfiorita is now considered one of the most beautiful wrecks in the Mediterranean Sea, a destination for diving carried out exclusively by technical divers, due to the difficulties represented by the high depth, the current and the nets on the wreck.
