KINOSAKI ONSEN – Things to Do, How to get there – Tattoo friendly hot springs town in Japan, 2023

Kinosaki onsen is such a beautiful, historic town, with 7 bath houses and ryokan that are all tattoo-friendly. Watch my video to see why it’s the best onsen town in Japan.

You can get to Kinosaki on a direct train from Kyoto, Osaka or Kobe. The train journey might seem long at 2 hours 40 minutes, but it’s through scenic countryside so it’s a very enjoyable trip on the Konotori or Hamakaze train. There are lots of ryokan in Kinosaki (subscribe for a review of the ryokan I stayed at). Whichever hotel you choose to stay at, you get a pass for all 7 public hot spring bath-houses in town. It’s a gorgeous town around a canal, with beautiful architecture – very picturesque. There’s enough to do for a day or two, including a rope-way, hiking, cycling in the countryside, shopping and a beach just 10 minutes away by train. There are also lots of cafes and street food around the town. The video was filmed at the start of March 2023, just before cherry blossom season.

  1. Oh we left Kinosaki 5 days ago. It was magical although the fireworks and lantern events took it to another level for us! Such a cozy atmosphere and the onsens were so beautiful. We tried Satono yu, Goshono yu, Kono yu and Ichino yu. All had their different charms ❤ Also outdoor onsen at ~10 pm was sooo good in the summer heat 🤩

We stayed 2 nights, definitely recommend to stay more than 1 night. Alot of things to see and you really want to have a slow pace to take it all in. The hike up the mountain was well worth it imo ❤

  2. Great video! What a beautiful town! I “Love” how Japan has smaller towns for one or two days visits.

  3. Kinosaki Onsen is a small but very charming and beautiful town. 💖✨
I've been on the train many times, but I've never gotten off. 😓
I'd like to go oneday. 💓

The Green🍀 class car of the Kohnotori limited express seemed to be comfortable. 😚

  4. Another great video from 'Cakes with Faces'! You have yet to disappoint. Thanks!

  5. I think I was in the same Ryokan in April but it was raining. That one on the right at 10:45 or 19:07. And you had a little matcha tea ceremony at check-in.

  6. This is definitely going on my bucket list Amy. The video was beautiful, thank you so much for bringing Japan to us 🇯🇵❤️

  7. Amazing! For your Ryokan video. I would love to know how to book, sometimes it's confusing if you pay per person or per room. What the meals are like, set Veggie/fish options. And maybe just like what to look for when your booking. I'm getting so confused half the time trying to research be great to know more about the Ryokans themselves. Thanks!

  8. I absolutely must have those kitty glasses! Can you let me know where I can find them? I’ll be in Kyoto in October.

  9. I still have 2 bathhouses left to visit at Kinosaki, because I went for one day only and another was closed (Goshonoyu and Ichinoyu, I think) for renovation. Kounoyu was very nice, the forest atmosphere was so relaxing. My favorite thing, though, was Onsenji. The priestess seemed so thrilled to have a foreign tourist there to hand her english guide sheet to, and I got a towel as a gift.

  10. I just added this to my list for November I think a day trip from kyoto if I can get a late train back so that it is worth the long train journey ❤

  11. Thank you Amy & Phil for a great travelogue, i't's really whetted my appetite for my first trip to Japan coming up in October. Can't wait!

  12. I like seeing the stamps that you collect. Have you made a video about them? If not could you make one, please?

  13. I've been to Kinosaki in Winter and it was magical. Especially at night. Thank you for the excellent video that brought back great memories.

  14. I’m so glad you visited Kinosaki! I mentioned it on a survey awhile ago and you posted a video on it. We are planning to visit Kinosaki/tooyoka and this video was super helpful. Thank you 🇯🇵❤️

  15. Thank you for this video. I’ll be staying there for my birthday in 3 weeks 😊 I will also have a JR pass (standard not green car). Do you think I need to reserve my seat for the Kinosaki Onsen train in advance? Did it seem crowded?

  16. Approximately 30 minutes of quality travelogue later, I'm still legit shocked that a Japanese cashier left an item out of a shopping bag.

  17. Kinosaki Onsen was very popular with authors and poets. Technically you should worship at the temple before entering the bath (but I don't think anyone does this now). I always thought that the willow trees planted along the stream came from Hangzhou's West Lake in China,… but when I asked the local government office they said this is just a legend. If you ever go in Winter matsubagani (snow crab) will be in season, as well as my ultimate favorite fish buri (I'm sorry, I don't know how to translate).
