The Kitaro Train operates on the JR Sakai Line between Yonago Station and Sakaiminato Station. 4 types of trains are currently in operation in rotation: the “Kitaro Train” in August 2000, the “New Kitaro Train” in November 2005, the “Nezumi Otoko Train” in February 2006, and the “Neko Musume Train” in July 2006. Currently, four types of trains are in operation in rotation. The cute Kitaro family is depicted not only on the exterior but also on the inside of the trains, making them very popular among children. On the day I visited, many children were on a field trip.

Sakaiminato City is associated with “Gegege no Kitaro. Shigeru Mizuki, the author of the manga, was born in Sakaiminato. Sakaiminato Station is a 3-hour train ride from Okayama and an hour from Tottori City. The last leg of the trip from Yonago is a ride on the Kitaro Train, which has designs of the cartoon characters. The station is the terminus of the JR Sakai Line. The area around the station is filled with yokai art reflecting Mizuki’s works: “Gegege no Kitaro,” produced in 1959, created a genre that combines horror and comedy by exploring the spirits of Japanese folklore known as yokai.
