  1. The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. On that day, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids This was 3 months after Pearl Harbour February 1942 . Peace out

  2. My grandfather was up in Darwin during the war the only thing is I'm not sure if he was there at the time of the jap attack or after the attack

  3. Thanks for that Phezz. Respect to your grandfather. My great grandfather was stationed in Darwin during the attacks. He survived. After those initial attacks, 20 months of air raids over the north part of the country continued. Not just Darwin but also Exmouth, Townsville etc. (Estimated that a further 1200 died in that period). In May-Jun 1942, Midget subs attacked Sydney harbour. one of our ships was sunk(HMAS Kuttabul) and 22 men died. There was also some shelling of the coast, no one was killed during that.
There was some heavy censorship at the time to the public and even in the years after apparently people didn't talk about it. But in the last few decades it's become more known and talked about and commemorated.

  4. She didn't explain that after the learners permit you are still not on a full licence

  5. the total loss of life to invade the Japanese Homeland would have cost more in Allied lives than the dropping of the atomic bomb on civilians. The Japanese were fighting a war of attrition hoping to wear down the allies and force them to the negotiating table. the Japanese government where quite happy to send thousands of civilians to their deaf arm with nothing more than sharpened bamboo sticks.Dropping of the atomic bomb was the right thing at that time in history.

  6. My grandfathers/grandmothers, my parents all grew up in the ww2 era, they were tough because of depression, war in Britain and europe and the Australiasia Japanese. Food shortage during the war had to rashen books like Britain.

  7. My great uncle was a bomber pilot, who flew from Darwin and Townsville, a volunteer from Tasmania! He saved the US Carrier in Sydney Harbour, and he also saved Coffs Harbour from mini subs – he died flying 14 Americans to the Islands in a poorly fueled American plane! His mother never recovered, his father died of grief, he never married or had any children, he was very gifted and very loved! His memorial is in Darwin! ๐Ÿ˜ช๐Ÿ‘ America has always had an enormous need for power and control over the world, yes, the Japanese bombings were excessive – overkill! ๐Ÿคจ

  8. The nuking of Japan was probably brought about by the estimates for US military losses being over 1.7 million soldiers dead and wounded. At that stage of the war, those figures were unacceptable to the military and political leaders of the US.

  11. You may also not know that due to a 'time-zone' error, the Japanese attack on British Malaya began before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Australian Air-force 1 Squadron was the first to see action in the Pacific War. Seven Hudsons were dispatched under the command of Wing Commander Davis, after reports that another convoy of Japanese warships was shelling beach defenses in Malaya in preparation to land troops. By dawn one transport had been destroyed, a second was ablaze, and a third later disappeared after receiving many direct hits. 1 Squadron lost two aircraft and their crews.

  12. It makes a lot of us think of our grandparents & other family/friends. Youโ€™re right, they were a badass generation of exceptional people.
Regarding the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki; Hiroshima was an important economic and military hub, that had so far escaped serious air raid damage, & Nagasaki was a large port with military facilities/factories. The intent was to facilitate the end of the war. When the Japanese surrender was still not forthcoming after Hiroshima, Nagasaki became the second target.
It served itโ€™s purpose & was deemed justified at the time. The death of so many civilians was horrific & would be a war crime by todayโ€™s standards but it wasnโ€™t done todayโ€ฆwe can only mourn, remember & learn. โœŒ๐Ÿผ
