Beppu is a must-visit destination in Japan. It’s located on the southern island of Kyushu, and is one of the country’s most famous onsen towns. With almost 2,300 hot springs it’s the ultimate place to go for a soak, but it’s also a fantastic base from which to hike.
In this guided day trip, I’ll take you from Beppu out to the iconic Yufudake aka Mount Yufu and climb both the peaks of the crater at its summit, then we’ll head back to Beppu to the Kannawa Steam Bath for a traditional sauna, check out Umi Jigoku aka Sea Hell and then walk to an observation platform to see all the plumes of steam rising up across the city.

Great climb. Love me a good vertical. My preference would be winter though as it gets a pretty tuft of snow.
