Okinawa’s biggest traditional event, Naha Giant Tug-of-War was held on October 9th 2011. It’s said that the history of Naha Giant Tug-of-War started around 1451, about 560 years ago. Tug-of-War was not held in 1936 to 1970, but in 1971, the year of 50th anniversary of Naha City, it revived to celebrate. Since then, it is held on Sunday before the second Monday of every October. The gigantic rope is recognized as the biggest rope made by straw in the world by Guinness World Records. The total length of the rope is about 200 meters (656 feet) and its weight is 43 tons. The event gathers about 275,000 spectators and people enjoyed joining the world’s biggest tug of war festival.
