How to Live Abroad Part-Time for Cheap! | Flex-pat Living

In today’s video, we explain an affordable way of living abroad. It is how to live abroad part-time for cheap using a method we call flex-pat living. We will share a new approach to international living without the hassles of residential visas to other countries, large financial commitments and having to relocate your permanent home.

▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.

We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.

We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. We also post Shorts, so check those out, too. We hope to entertain you, but most importantly, we want to inspire you and give you the confidence to plan your own adventure around the world.

  1. Love your approach and I'm thinking it makes sense for me. I would think living 3 months in one country would also give you some time to rest up too. In the past when I would travel abroad with family for 2 weeks or less, I was always fighting jet lag and everyday just beat from all that we felt like we had to cover each day. Flex Pat (think you should trade mark this word lol) allows you to relax and be present in the moment instead of worrying everyday about the schedule and stressing over whether you covered it and got your moneys worth.

  2. My husband and I recently retired earlier this year. Our goal is to live this same life as John and Bev. We really enjoy watching their travels and beautiful videos!

  3. Hello John and Bev why don't you come to India? We have some amazing deserts, mountains, coastal beaches, heritage travel and so much more. Welcome to India 😊

  4. Ding, Ding,Ding ! This is what we have discussed and planned for years now. When we pull the plug on work early, Still be in our 50s, we are going to spend a couple months in a more temperate location during the summers to get away from the heat where we live and likewise in the winters go to warmer places. We have a budget that will allow us to do so for 4 to 6 months at a time. Then spend holidays, some spring, fall at home area where it is lovely those times of year.

  5. I agree with your children that you're a cute old couple.
I followed most of your videos and learned a lot from them.
Thank you and enjoy your retirement 👍😍

  6. This is what I would love to do in a handful of years when I implement my partial retirement plan (taking winters off – pretty easy as a contractor). Thanks for the info.!

  7. Lovely video and now I have a term for a plan I decided upon years ago. After traveling, living and working in Asia, Europe and Central America I decided after my son is off to college I would split my time between living in the US and abroad. For me the decision to do so was based upon the fact that while having enjoyed the places I have visited, I never found one particular location I would want to fully commit to by moving there. Flex-pat living is the way to go. Best of luck and safe travels.

  8. You guys should spend a couple months in Florianopolis, Brazil. It’s a beautiful island that attracts a lot of expats. Safe, clean, organized, and cheap of course. I’m biased because I’m from there but I think you would love it.

  9. Love, love, love this video–thank you! We're in our 50s and mostly like our jobs, plus have kids ages 20 & 22 (one near us, one far) and aging parents. But right now, no one needs us physically there full-time, and our health is good. We have realized how precious this window of time is, so we're taking 6-8 weeks away twice a year, plus short vacations with our kids. My husband cut back from full-time, and I switched to being a contractor. With decreased income, we're also cutting back some on new money going into retirement savings (we'd been at 25% our full working lives), but we feel so fortunate to be doing this. Our first chunk was to Thailand, prioritizing activities requiring really good physical health–and it was transformative. We are hooked!

  10. Please keep making videos, that’s were you both have a niche. You both seam like very sensible and conservative, so I trust everything you say. When most people will think it’s crazy idea, I can have them watch your videos.

  11. I love your video! This is exactly what I had been planning to do. If you made full videos of your 3 month stints, that would be helpful and worth watching/following! <3

  12. I love flex-pat living. That's exactly what my husband and I are planning to do when we retire… now you gave us an official name for it. I love it!!! Super excited to hear all about your adventures 😅

  13. It sounds like a great concept and I like the idea of following the ideal weather. I was wondering if you have a home base back in the states and/or what that would look and feel like if I did sell my house and car in favor of full time travel.
