The Hiroshima Peace Memorial is a powerful symbol of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. However, little known to many, the building that now stands as the memorial was once a thriving exhibition hall. It was built in 1915 and used for various trade shows and events until it was destroyed in an instant on August 6th, 1945.
What’s truly remarkable about this building is that even though it was only around for thirty years, it had already made history before its destruction. In 1920, it hosted one of the largest gatherings of women in Japanese history who were advocating for universal suffrage.
So not only does the Hiroshima Peace Memorial serve as a reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare but also as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who fought for equality and justice.
