GATES OF HELL – OSOREZAN JAPAN | BODAIJI TEMPLE | 菩提寺 青森県 | 恐山 | बोदाईजी मंदिर | EP. 8 | VLOG 60

Welcome to my YouTube channel!
This is the 8th episode of travel series “West and East Coast of Japan”. We will explore the famous Osorezan. Osorezan, also known as Mount Osore, is a famous mountain located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. While it is true that Osorezan is often associated with the concept of the “Gates of Hell,” it is important to understand that this is a symbolic interpretation rather than a literal representation.

Osorezan holds religious and spiritual significance in Japanese folklore and beliefs, particularly in relation to the afterlife. It is considered a sacred site associated with Buddhist and Shinto traditions, and it is believed to be a place where the spirits of the dead gather and where the boundary between the living and the dead is thin. The volcanic landscape of Osorezan, with its barren, desolate appearance and sulfurous fumes, contributes to its association with the “Gates of Hell” metaphorically.

The area features several unique attractions, including the Bodhisattva Hall, Jigoku-dani (Hell Valley), and a lake known as Usoriyama, which is said to resemble the river Sanzu—a mythical river in Japanese Buddhism that the dead must cross.

Osorezan is also known for its annual festival called “Osorezan Taisai,” held in July, where visitors come to pay respects to their ancestors and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed.

Join us as we unravel the mysteries of Osorezan in Japan.
