Visiting the Holiest Site in Japan: History, Etiquette and Fun on a Day Trip to Ise Jingu (pt2: 内宮)

Ise Grand Shrine has been a pilgrimage destination for well over 1000 years. For some, it’s simply a serenely beautiful and historic place to visit. But to many others, this sacred forest is the closest place to God in the human world. But why is this place so special to Japanese people? Last time (in part 1) we visited “Geku”, the Outer Shrine. If you haven’t watched that yet here is the link: https://youtu.be/emUCHwQqyrU

Today we visit ‘Naiku’, the inner shrine of Ise Jingu. Along the way, we’ll talk about some history and culture associated with this amazing place in order to understand its special significance. We’ll also stop by the traditional pilgrims’ hospitality district, Okage-yokocho, for some street food and maybe a drink. This place has its own special historical and cultural significance as well, and is worth a trip on its own for its culinary options, taiko drumming, and Edo-era atmosphere. It’s going to be a fun day.

  1. Well, here it is. The second part of my Ise Jingu Experience series is ready. Sorry about the wait for this one! It’s been ALMOST finished for ages, but I haven’t been quite satisfied with it until now. (It’s not an easy topic to cover, you know. 😅)

  2. Nice place to wander around doesn't look like many westerners go there at least in your video. The Okage-yokocho area looks fun I would like to see a video of you guys visiting all the sites another area I need to see when I visit Japan next year. Thanks for the info

  3. This really makes me want to visit Ise. I had never heard of okage maeri before, or the connection to Okage Yokocho's name!

  4. Great place and atmosphere. The video is super informative as usually. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
