Japan Vlog – Day trip to Ohara & Kurama ・大原 & 鞍馬

April 2016
We took a day trip in the car north of Kyoto, up in the mountains. First we visited Ohara, and after that we went to Kurama.

——

Ohara (大原)
Ohara is a small town in the mountains of northern Kyoto, and it’s best known for the Sanzenin Temple (三千院), with its large temple grounds and a variety of buildings, gardens and walking paths. There are many more temples in Ohara, but we only visited the Sanzenin.

The path that leads from the town to the temple has many small shops, and one of the local specialties are “aisu kyuri” (アイスきゅうり), cucumbers pickled in seaweed flavored ice water and served on a stick. I tried one and it was delicious! I really love cucumber 😀

Kurama (鞍馬)
Kurama is best known for its temple Kurama-dera and its hot spring, Kurama Onsen. We didn’t visit the onsen this time, but will hopefully go back there sometime to visit.

Kurama-dera (鞍馬寺) is a Buddhist temple located in the mountainside above the town. It takes about 30-45 minutes to climb up to the temple’s main buildings. Behind the main building, the hiking trail continues through the forest past several other temples before it reaches the town of Kibune. We didn’t take the hiking trail this time, but I would love to do it next time!

We then visited a small little café somewhere on the main street, to have some tea and dango (a Japanese dumpling and sweet made from mochiko, rice flour)
