Dotonbori is a lively entertainment area in the center of Osaka in Japan. This is the most popular tourist destination in Osaka. The name of the area refers to the Dotonbori Canal and to Dotonbori Street. The street is located parallel to the canal’s southern bank. The area seems modern with many neon lights, eye-catching billboards and giant seafood decorations. But Dotonbori actually has a long history that started in 1612. One merchant Yasui Doton invested all of his money in an ambitious development project of canal. After his death Doton’s cousin decided to complete the project and he named the canal in Doton’s honour. Already since then, the area around Dotonbori has been full of restaurants and entertainment.
