Hakodate is a city on Hokkaido Island. It was an Ainu (indigenous people of Hokkaido) town before 17th century Japanese began migrating to the northern island. In 1854, Hakodate was the first port to be opened to foreign nations. As a result, western countries flocked there to establish a commercial foothold.
