D: Maple, I’m excited to hear about your sightseeing experience in South Korea.
M: Oh, I have lots of photos and videos to show you! On the third day of my trip in Seoul, I met up with my Korean friend, Misook, and she showed me around the city.
D: Oh. Where did you go?
M: Our meeting spot was at Anguk station. Since the Swiss Grand Hotel I stayed at is conveniently located near Hongje Station on Seoul Subway Line 3, I was able to take the line straight to Anguk station.
D: That’s convenient.
M: We met at exit 1 of Anguk station. The first place she took me was the Seoul Museum of Craft Art to see a permanent exhibition called “Embroidery in Bloom”.
D: Wow, it looks beautiful.
M: Yes, and I learned that all the pieces were made using embroidery.
D: Really? They are so intricate!
M: Look at this one called bojagi.
D: Bojagi?
M: Yes, bojagi is similar to the Japanese furoshiki in that they are both traditional square-shaped cloths used for wrapping and carrying objects.
D: That’s interesting.

M: After the museum, we walked to an Italian restaurant that Misook had reserved for us. The restaurant was a bit of a walk from the station, but it was worth it. The building was an old house that had been renovated into a restaurant with a modern interior.
D: That sounds cool. What did you guys eat?
M: We had pizza with eggplant and squid ink pasta. Both were fantastic, but I especially loved the pasta.

M: After lunch, we walked around the city. Misook told me that many old houses in Anguk have been renovated and repurposed as trendy cafes, restaurants, and shops.
D: Cool.

M: We took a break at this beautiful European-style café and sat outside.
D: What a nice place.
M: We chatted a lot there.
D: It looks like it was a beautiful day!
M: Yes, it was great to spend some time outside.

M: Misook took me to Changgyeonggung Palace.
D: Oh, cool. Who lived there?
M: It was originally built as a secondary palace for the king’s consort and concubines. It was one of several palaces in Seoul that were used by the royal family and court officials for various purposes.

M: This place was beautiful and peaceful.
D: Nice.

M: And then, we took a subway to Gangnam.
D: I think it’s a very famous city because I know the famous song “Gangnam Style”. What was there?
M: I heard that Gangnam is known for its upscale neighborhoods and high-end shopping malls.
But this time, she took me to a very nice river-side area.
D: How wonderful!
It’s great that you also had a very relaxing time in the big city.
M: Yep. We chatted a lot by the river.

M: Then, I took the train back to the hotel.

M: The next day, Atsuko and I went to Ediya Coffee, a coffeehouse chain, for brunch, and then we flew back to Japan.

D: Thanks for sharing. It was so much fun watching the videos and listening to your story.

D: By the way, do you remember that I promised you I’d take you to one of the Brazilian dining areas in Hamamatsu?
M: I remember that. Are we going there next?
D: Yes, that’s the plan. You’ll get to try some new cuisine.
M: I’m really looking forward to it!
