Taste of Hiroshima: Authentic Okonomiyaki for G7 Summit Leaders

As the G7 Summit takes place in the beautiful city of Hiroshima, we, the proud locals, have decided to showcase our beloved dish: Okonomiyaki. UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak enjoyed making his own okonomiyaki during the G7 meeting.

In this episode, I will provide serving of Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki cooked by Okonomiyaki masters from my favourite restaurant “Rei-chan”. Okonomiyaki, which literally translates to “grilled as you like it,” is a savory pancake packed with layers of delicious ingredients and topped with a special sauce, mayo, and bonito flakes. This Hiroshima specialty differs from other styles of Okonomiyaki due to its unique preparation method and regional variations.
Our skilled local chefs will showcase their expertise as they artfully mix the batter and layer it with mouthwatering ingredients, such as cabbage, green onions, pork, and seafood. They will demonstrate the meticulous cooking process, where each layer is delicately arranged on a teppan (hotplate) and cooked to perfection. As the enticing aroma fills the air, the G7 Summit leaders will be treated to a visual feast, watching their Okonomiyaki come to life, if they try Okonomiyaki.
The moment of truth arrives as the chefs expertly flip the Okonomiyaki with precision and grace, ensuring that every bite is a harmonious blend of flavors. Once cooked, the savory masterpiece is skillfully dressed with a medley of toppings, including the special Okonomiyaki sauce that lends it a tangy and slightly sweet taste. A drizzle of creamy mayonnaise and a sprinkle of bonito flakes add the final touches, elevating the dish to a culinary delight.
