Gouda by Candlelight (Netherlands) – The Most Traditional Dutch Christmas Light Festival (4K)

Beyond its fame of being the Dutch Cheese Capital, Gouda is also the host city for one of the oldest light festivals in the Netherland: Gouda by Candlelight. The tradition started in 1956 with the donation of a Christmas tree by the Norwegian sister city Kongsberg. Two years later, a candle factory in Gouda had the idea of celebrating its 100th anniversary with a candle night in the historic Market Square. The idea was so successful that they decided to repeat it during Christmas festivities and the Kaarsjesavond festival was created. Ever since, on a December night, 1,500 candles decorate the windows of the historic Town Hall and thousands more behind the windows of the buildings in the city centre. The light decoration of the donated Christmas tree is also inaugurated with a performance including music, dance and a speech of the town Mayor. The magic of this night draws a crowd to check the beauty of a town lit by candlelight.
